It's not really work, It's just the power to charm I'm still standing in the wind, But I never wave bye bye #DavidBowie.
When this lyric appeared on my Twitter feed the day of David Bowie’s death I thought it a really apt description of the work that I do.
I work with clients and help them reach decisions about their career, encouraging the recognition of talents and matching these to different roles and ways of working. It doesn't feel like ‘work’ and no two career development meetings ever evolve in the same way.
I was asked recently what makes me enthusiastic about work – I love the fact that I can bring added value to my one to one guidance work, through drawing on my work in different organisations, assessing and training. I believe this offers me insight from both sides of the fence, which in turn means I can offer something extra to both types of client. In horse racing terms, I do often feel that I am getting a sneaky run up the inside rail, always a reason to be enthusiastic!
It is my hope that I will be able to offer delegates at the Mums Enterprise Roadshow the opportunity to consider what their skills and strengths are and consider how these can combine to allow their careers to evolve alongside their families. Whether this is through taking on a completely new role, embarking on an entrepreneurial start-up or simply tweaking and adapting the ways in which they have previously worked.
I see my role as helping mums to identify what and how they want to use their skills set going forward, no matter how long they might have been away from the conventional world of work.
This year so far, I have had bookings in the arenas of assessor training, training design for talent management and employee retention courses as well as my staple and my favourite, which is one to one career development with adult career changers as well as students finding their way through the college and university application process.
As I sit and write this I realise what a treat it is to have been able to develop a portfolio career which allows me to use the spectrum of my strengths and skills sets.
Meanwhile, the Mums Enterprise events related traffic on my Twitter feed is increasing by the day, and I am getting increasingly excited about what the Rickmansworth event is going to deliver.
See you there - I can only make Rickmansworth but come and say hello and tell me about your career challenges. You can also visit my website www.talentandcareer.net
