There are many, many reason about why I love what I do but I would say these are the main 'P's :-)
Sometimes the scale of an event can be daunting at first. There is so much to do, so many decisions to be made and so many different people involved, all that with a deadline looming and the fact that people are relying on me…yep you could say that can be daunting. But you know what, I think that is exactly what I thrive off. I enjoy the feeling of pressure because it is exciting and I am very motivated because of it. For some daft reason I like the responsibility, just like I love the responsibility of owning and running my own business, there is no-where to hide, scary but also exhilarating.
A huge reason I enjoy organising events is the people I meet. Whether they be clients, part of the team I am working with, suppliers and those I meet at networking events or even strike up conversations with on Social Media and Email. Everybody is so unique and I love that.
I also enjoy working with different clients and scoping them out, getting a feeling for how they work, their business priorities, learning about their industry and also understanding where that business is trying to go, what is their vision? These are all questions I enjoy seeking answers to, that along with the fact that everybody has their quirks and different ways of doing things. I need to be easy to work with and that means working all these things out and being able to adapt my own way of working and communicating so it works for my Little Fish clients.
So yes People, random, can never predict and just some great people out there.
I never did do the uni thing, although I did get my CIM Diploma in Marketing but that was whilst I was working in a Marketing Supervisor role at 25 and through distance learning, in evenings and purely on-line. I enjoy learning whilst I am in the thick of it, really rolling my sleeves up and just attempting things. I use and apply the various marketing theories I studied as part of my marketing diploma all the time – it isn't like trigonometry from school, I've never once made use of that. I am a better marketer for my Marketing Diploma 100% but I don’t think I would have done so well completing it if I were learning in a classroom setting or if it were a topic I didn't enjoy, I was able write my assignments about real projects and my real working life and experiences.
I am learning something new everyday and I am sure that will never stop.
When I drove home after my first ever Little Fish client event came to an end I felt adrenalin and a feeling of exhilaration. (My first Little Fish Event Management client was the Skills Finding Agency, Apprenticeship Awards - spooky as that is where my love for events started, just sayin) It was 1am, I was tired and driving home but that didn't matter. I was sad the events were over, I found it odd that there was no call on Monday but I felt a sense of immense achievement and was very happy that the events were a success, it was the reward for all that pressure in the build up to them.
I really do enjoy what I do, I love how busy an event day is and you know what I think what I love the most, is making other people happy. Whether it be such a tiny thing as getting the missing electric hooked up on a stand to having people stand on stage and telling the whole room that my client should be very pleased as it's the best event he has attended yet (that happened whoop) - organising events makes others happy and that's satisfying.
There is no greater pressure in all the land, but as I say I relish in that and after 16 years I am ready and confident that I can truly deliver not just amazing events and experiences for all involved. But I truly believe I can create the very best events anybody has ever seen......well you have to be confident...right?:-) Yes the events intend to truly make a difference to the working futures of all who attend, but that doesn't mean to say they need to be stiff, overly serious and dull. Nope they will be vibrant and colourful and I intend to create an atmosphere which is enjoyable – I want people to walk away feeling like they had a great fun as well as a truly valuable day. Attendees will leave knowing that they now are equipped with the tools they need for their own missions to the moon. That will only happen by having amazing organisations involved, and lucky for all of us there are so many awesome organisations who can specifically help women in all of our four areas which is retraining, flexible working , starting and growing a business.
When it comes to people, I have met and continue to meet such amazing people and I have heard just so many fantastic and inspiring stories from ambitious people in our exhibiting organisations but also mums who can't wait to visit. . My background is in male dominated industries so this is a breath of fresh air for me, and I love all the awesome and creative organisations coming to us and those I am finding.
Personal and professional development, comes in the shed loads. I have huge ambitions for the Mums Enterprise Roadshow, we will be a well recognised nationwide brand with local events being held all over the UK. What an achievement that will be, and I know when people see how fab these events are Little Fish will win more clients wanting us to organise events on their behalf. I am just ‘developing; all over the place ha.
And finally pleasure, well what can I say. I am enjoying organising these events immensely and I am proud every day, and it warms my heat when we receive get great feedback. I am enjoying curating and steering the events direction, I enjoy the responsibility this brings which is a lot - exhibitors, sponsors and visitors are relying on me to deliver and I won't let them down.
As Austin Powers would say ’This is my bag baby’. and it feels great.
P.S - Events are my bag design is not. I am not alone in Mums Enterprise I work with my business partner Lucy Chaplin a talented Graphic Designer who is the creative genius about everything you see from Mums Enterprise - she has just had a little baby so is a bit quiet at the minute but you can read more about Lucy on our meet the team page.
So there you have it, that is why I love organising events, what do you love about what you do?
